Questions for Discussion:

How is one’s methodological approach to scientific issues influenced by one’s academic background and training? Might Kalanit be said to take a more “computational systems” approach to vision than someone who might have come to the field from a direction less strongly aligned with computer science? Would it be fair to say that, at some level, she believes that the brain is a “very complex computer”?

In what ways is the notion of “redundancy” mentioned in this chapter related to “neuroplasticity”?

Kalanit’s view of how the brain engages with the world through our eyes appears to be one of processing sensory inputs from the external world. How, if at all, can this be reconciled with other competing interpretations about the brain actively making predictions and then comparing those predictions with incoming sense data (see, for example, the Ideas Roadshow conversations Minds and Machines with Miguel Nicolelis and Constructing Our World: The Brain’s-Eye View with Lisa Feldman Barrett)?
